Dr M defends Sisters in Islam from Pas assault

KUALA LUMPUR, Wed:
Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad took a swipe at Pas today for proposing a ban on Sisters in Islam (SIS). Making his case against the party in a short blog posting, Dr Mahathir said he was “saddened” by the proposal, one of 11 resolutions passed by Pas at its recent Muktamar last week.
“I don’t always agree with the views of the SIS, but they have not negated Islam.
“In most instances they cite verses of the Quran and Hadith to support their views. If we don’t agree then give the reasons why we don’t agree ... to resort to banning is draconian,” he said on his blog, chedet.cc.
Dr Mahathir implied that the resolution was a reflection of Pas’ view on national policy and governance.
“We can imagine what a Pas government for Malaysia would be like,” he said.
Pas, on the fourth and final day of their 55th Muktamar or general assembly on Sunday, passed without debate the resolution demanding for the banning of SIS.
The resolution called on the National Fatwa Council to investigate the NGO for misrepresenting Islam and if found guilty, ban the organisation and send its members for “rehabilitation”.
Pas’ only female elected central working committee (CWC) member Dr Lo’ Lo’ Ghazali however opposed the resolution, saying it was better for the party to engage SIS directly instead of pushing for a ban.
